Common use
Advent DT is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including those affecting the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, ear, and soft tissues. It combines Amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills bacteria, with Clavulanic Acid, which inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes that make bacteria resistant to antibiotics. This combination enhances effectiveness against resistant strains. The DT (dispersible tablet) formulation is especially suited for children and those with difficulty swallowing.
Dosage and direction
Advent DT should be taken as prescribed by a healthcare provider, usually every 8 or 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. The tablet must be dissolved in a small amount of water and taken immediately after mixing. Dosage is typically based on weight and age, especially in pediatric cases. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early to prevent resistance.
Precautions
Before using Advent DT, inform your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, kidney problems, or allergic reactions to penicillins or cephalosporins. Use with caution in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) due to aspartame content in some formulations. Monitor for allergic reactions or gastrointestinal symptoms during treatment. It should not be used to treat viral infections such as flu or the common cold.
Contraindications
Advent DT is contraindicated in individuals with a known allergy to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. It should not be used in patients who have experienced jaundice or liver dysfunction associated with this combination in the past. It is also not recommended for neonates unless directed by a doctor. Always consult a healthcare provider before starting this medication.
Possible side effect
Common side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and skin rash. Less commonly, patients may experience yeast infections, liver enzyme changes, or allergic reactions like itching or swelling. Rare but serious effects include severe skin reactions or anaphylaxis. Contact your doctor if you notice persistent diarrhea or signs of liver problems like yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Drug interaction
Advent DT may interact with oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), allopurinol, and methotrexate, potentially increasing the risk of adverse effects. It may also reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Inform your doctor about all prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products you are using. Avoid taking with alcohol as it may increase stomach upset.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one — do not double up to compensate. Try to maintain consistent intervals between doses. Irregular dosing can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe gastrointestinal distress, seizures, or kidney dysfunction, especially in patients with preexisting kidney issues. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical assistance. Treatment typically involves supportive care and hydration. Always follow the prescribed dose to avoid complications.
Storage
Store Advent DT at room temperature (15–25°C / 59–77°F), away from moisture and direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep the medication in its original packaging until use. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
